What is Diarrhea?

“Diarrhea (also known as Loose motion) is when you experience extremely thin and watery stool with frequent toilet visits. It occurs mostly during the summer season. It is not a disease but a sign that something is not right with your body.”

What Causes Diarrhea?

The intestine has a slimy layer that makes a special juice to help digest food. If food doesn’t get digested properly, it can lead to diarrhea. Normally, this slimy layer reabsorbs the juice it makes during digestion. But sometimes, it can’t reabsorb it, and that’s when you get diarrhea.

  • Bad Eating Choices: Stuff like greasy, fried food, overdoing it at mealtime, or eating food that’s gone bad can give you diarrhea.
  • Laxatives and Ice: Using laxatives or going overboard with ice can also cause the runs.
  • Pesky Worms and Spicy Stuff: Having pesky worms in your belly or chowing down on super spicy food might make you run for the bathroom.
  • Sleep Schedule: Staying up all night messes with your digestion and could lead to diarrhea.
  • Constipation to Diarrhea: Sometimes, when you’re constipated, it can suddenly switch to diarrhea.
  • Emotions: Feeling scared, sad, or stressed out can affect your stomach and lead to tummy troubles.
  • Weather Changes: Sudden weather shifts can mess with your digestion.
  • Bile Levels: Having too much or too little bile in your gut can also make you dash to the restroom.

What are the symptoms of diarrhea?

  • Runny Poop: Diarrhea means you have watery, loose poop, and it often happens multiple times a day.
  • Tummy Aches: You might get cramps or discomfort in your belly when you have diarrhea.
  • Sudden Rush: It can hit you out of nowhere – a strong, urgent need to use the toilet.
  • Feeling Queasy: Sometimes, diarrhea comes with a sick feeling in your stomach, like you might throw up.
  • Thirsty and Dry: All that extra bathroom time can make you thirsty, and your mouth might feel dry. You might also notice your pee turning a darker yellow.
  • Feeling Tired: Diarrhea can leave you feeling worn out and weak, especially if it sticks around for a while.
  • Low Fever: In some cases, you could have a slight fever along with diarrhea.
  • Unusual Stuff in Poop: Sometimes, you might see blood or mucus in your diarrhea, which can be a sign of an underlying problem.

Preventive Measures to be Taken

  • Mother Milk: If you’re a new mother, breastfeeding is like a superpower. It keeps your baby strong and helps avoid nasty tummy troubles.
  • Avoid Bottles: Instead of using bottles, grab a bowl and a spoon to feed your little one. It’s neater and safer.
  • Clean Water Rules: Always cover your drinking water and use a mug with a handle to pour it. Hygiene matters!
  • Good Water Sources: Make sure the water you sip is from a clean, trustworthy place.
  • Guard Your Food: Keep your meals covered and fly-free. Those little critters can carry germs.
  • Bye-bye to Spoiled Food: Don’t munch on old, icky food or fruit that flies have partied on.
  • Handwash: Before chowing down, give your hands a good wash. It’s a simple way to stay healthy.

Bonus Tip:

Magic Water: Boil a liter of water until it’s one-fourth the size, then strain it through a clean cloth. Drink it lukewarm. It can help with diarrhea, bring back your appetite, and ease stomachaches, constipation, hiccups, and throwing up.

Avoid these Food Items

  • Spicy Stuff: Let’s give your tummy a break from those fiery, hot foods.
  • Greasy Goodies: It’s best to say “no thanks” to fried and super oily snacks and dishes.
  • Dairy Dilemma: Hold off on the milk, cheese, and ice cream, especially if your tummy doesn’t agree with dairy.
  • Sneaky Sweeteners: Be a little cautious with sugar substitutes, like the ones hiding in sugar-free gum and candies.
  • Rough Fiber Foods: Give your belly a rest from heavy-duty fiber foods like whole grains, raw veggies, and bran.
  • Alcohol Adventure: Alcohol can be a bit rough on your tummy and make your diarrhea worse, so maybe skip it for now.
  • Tangy Citrus: Oranges, grapefruits, and their zesty juices might not be your stomach’s best buddies when it’s feeling sensitive.
